Abstract: Since the StarMetro broke the story of four restaurants in Petaling Jaya found selling mutton dishes that did not contain mutton, the news has gone viral, leaving customers very worried. The issue came to light after Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) conducted spot-checks on restaurants following public complaints and took samples of the meat for DNA tests. MBPJ Health director Dr Chitra N. Vadivellu said the council would continue carrying out random testing at eateries and wet markets in the city.“We have already taken samples from a few other restaurants since the first four tested, and we will be taking samples from more restaurants,” she said. Dr Chitra added that the delay was due to typhoid-related operations and the department could only resume sampling by the end of November or early December.“We will not just go to restaurants, we will go straight to the source, which is all the markets in PJ,” said Dr. Chitra. To-date, the council had sent 19 samples for analysis, including the four which were discovered to be selling meat other than mutton advertised in their menus.“All Indian and Muslim restaurants will be covered throughout PJ in stages,” Dr Chitra added.
