Brazilian seafood processing association ABIPESCA said the industry takes the issue of weeding out fraudulent raw materials in the country "very seriously." This comes after an investigation in Brazil found that nearly four in 10 fish sold in some states have been replaced by species considered to be of inferior quality. Results of the so called "fake fish" probe drew public attention in a recent edition of TV Globo's hugely popular entertainment program Fantastisco, which also covers serious news subjects. Authorities found that 6 percent of companies with national distribution capabilities were selling fish that had been substituted for fish identified on packaging. The figure rose to 38 percent for companies just selling within individual Brazilian states. |
