A sessions court has waived jail term for two traders in lieu of payment of fines in food adulteration cases. Both the traders were convicted to six-month jail terms by a metropolitan court, but the sessions court has dropped their imprisonment from the sentence, on condition that they pay Rs 36,000 more towards fine. The magisterial court awarded jail term in these cases by mentioning a Supreme Court directive that food adulteration is an offence against all sections of society and hence be dealt with sternly. The sessions court cancelled the offenders' imprisonment on basis of a Supreme Court's order only. |
