Abstract: Adulteration of food or 'milawat' is the addition of another substance to a food item in order to increase its quantity. Will to earn more profits leads to this practice resulting in the loss of actual quality of the food item. Sometimes, it not only fails to meet the legal standards but also becomes lethal for human consumption. In a bid to curb the practice of adulteration of food and give more teeth to agencies, the Maharashtra government plans to amend anti-adulteration law sections to prescribe life imprisonment for the violators.
