Abstract: The maximum fine for makers of adulterated or mislabeled food products will be more than tripled, according to a Cabinet minister Tuesday, part of a government push to crack down on violators amid an ever-broadening food safety scandal. Minister without Portfolio Simon Chang said that pending approval from the Legislature, new amendments mean that violators will face fines up to NT$50 million (US$1.69 million), raised from the current maximum of NT$15 million, along with sentences of up to five years instead of three. Chang was speaking at a meeting that brought representatives from the ministries of health, finance, and justice, among others agencies, to review a draft of the proposed amendment to the Act Governing Food Sanitation. The amendment also covers the establishment of a food safety fund, which Chang said would be financed by fines on violators.
