Police in Italy have seized three quarters of a million litres of prosecco from two producers who were discovered adding extra sugar to it. The operation follows claims made by British dentists last year — angrily denied by Italian politicians — that prosecco’s sugar content was rotting the teeth of drinkers. Although demand is levelling off in the UK as drinkers try British sparkling wines, prosecco is still popular, with about 33 million bottles imported from Italy in the first half of this year. |
